Our Week In Maui Day 6
Day 6
Tuesday, October 19, 2010
Well, today we are leaving this little paradise of an island called Maui. We wake up knowing this news and are prepared .... But wait, our flight is not until 9 p.m. So, HOLLER, we pretty much have a full day left. And, so it begins.
In our typical fashion, coffee is brewing and we are dancing around our suite in a silly effort to gain energy for the day ahead. We spend the morning with coffee on our lanai reminiscing about the previous days and nights and all of the happiness they have spoiled us with.
Next stop, the fitness center. Again, we get a great workout in and head back to our room in order to accommodate our noon check out time. Everything is packed and we take our luggage down to the front desk where we are graciously greeted with enthusiasm by our friend, Margie, at the front desk. We finalize all of the paperwork and she even surprises us by waiving our resort fees... Very cool.
She arranges for our luggage to be stored and we head to the pool. Here we spend a few hours laying out, swimming and snapping a few more photos before we know we are leaving the Ritz. Today was a little different than the rest though. As Kelsey swam and was taking in the breeze that was embracing her sun-kissed face, a pool attendant was staring into something at the bottom of the pool... He looked perplexed, unsure of what to make of the object he pondered. A few moments later, it was confirmed that there was a loose deuce... And by that I mean that someone pooped in the pool. Kelsey was out of there and back to laying out with Allison as the attendants scooped out the evidence, taped the pool with CAUTION tape and shocked it, leaving it never to be swam in by us again... Well, not on this trip anyway.
Oh, how time flies. We changed clothes and got our luggage situated in our rental car and again, we were on our way to Paia. Of course, we needed to eat at this all-too-talked-about Mama's Fish House. I also wanted to go into Charley's and try to get propositioned for some Maui Wowie fun with Woody and Willie and the boys. :-)
The rain began to pour down just before we got to Paia but nothing would deter us. From this meal. Needless to say, we were shocked. This is not your typical fish house by my definition. I would say it rivals the Pineapple Grill in terms of ambiance and presentation. We snacked on the wasabi crusted calamari and then devoured a lobster stuffed mahi mahi that was caught just that day. So awesome! Everyone who pointed us in the direction of this restaurant was absolutely correct. Wonderful recommendation!
Back to Charley's for a few more photos and then one last stop at the Green Banana... And then the gelato shop Kelsey had been eying for a few days now. And, off to the airport we go! Some shanghai and a few flights later, we will be back on the mainland, back in Austin... And we love every bit of it. We leave Maui with amazing new memories, new triumphs, new dreams, and still beautiful, amazing lives that are ready to be lived to their fullest. It has been a tremendously tranquil, relaxing, peaceful week with lots of laughter, smiles and, most of all, love.
Perfection.

Our Week In Maui Day 5
Day 5
Monday, October 18, 2010
True to form, today started out perfectly (insert pangs of jealousy here). We woke up at 6:50am. I should note we went to bed at 9pm, so we were clearly energized and feeling good. We sat out on the lanai and reminisced about the day before on the road to Hana. Of course, each morning has not been complete without the island's kona coffee masterfully brewed with our added dash of French vanilla creamer and raw sugar. However, this morning wasn't quite like the others....
As I emptied the dishwasher and piddled around the suite to organize the place and catch up with Good Morning America, I noticed Allison had been out on the lanai for quite a while. It was now a little later in the morning and more people were out and about roaming the grounds and setting up by the pool. It occurred to me that Allison, so engrossed with her journalling efforts, didn't realize she was giving everyone at the Ritz (within sight) a show. Yes folks, she was topless. That's just what Maui does to a person. Utter bliss and relaxation. Totally natural. However, in the efforts of not getting kicked out, I grabbed her a t-shirt.
We then headed to the gym to work on our fitness and obsess over how flippin sweet the treadmills are a little more. On our way back we managed to steal about 6 bags of coffee from the housekeeping carts. What a productive morning.
Another pool day for the two of us filled with lots of sun and ridiculous photos. We came back up to the room and just relaxed for a while. Then we got ready for our fun filled evening of MAGIC!!!! First stop, however, was Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. For some good eats and a view right from the ocean! Allison ordered a 'big bucket of boat trash' and I had the mahi mahi. We ate anxiously and excitedly (aka I stuffed my face because I was paranoid we wouldn't have enough time)!!
We arrived at Warren and Annabelle's Magic Show perfectly punctual and observed we were the youngest people in there by decades. We read about the legend of Annabelle haunting the place and playing random ballads from her piano and then were ushered into a room with four doors and a giant stack of books where we were instructed to try one of the doors to gain access the parlor. We chose 'Destiny' and Annabelle immediately hinted we should look to the books for this one. Allison immediately saw the keyhole in the books and suddenly a brick wall between two of the doors opened.
We walked into one of the most enchanted and unique parlors ever. There were antiques dispersed amongst tables for two and a completely 1920s vibe to it all. We had no idea this is the experience we'd be taking in. We were sat and almost instantly sipping on a strawberry banana beverage and nibbling on seafood appetizers (not that we were even hungry). And to top it off before the show our 'royal flush package' provided a grandiose dessert. White chocolate raspberry cheesecake with an Oreo crust and raspberry drizzle. BOOMSHAKALAKA!
Alas, it was time for the show... We were ushered into a quaint auditorium seating only 78 people within 5 rows. The music began and an amusing looking man in a tuxedo tripped from behind the curtains to find his way onto thebstage. It was Warren. Now confronted by the sole man we have determined will be our entertainment for the night, we felt all of the excitement take over. 4!lucky honeymooned couples were granted access to the front row so we sat back in our 3rd row middle seating and the laughs began immediately... After all, this is a comedy magic show.
For the next 2 hours Warren dazzled us with his slight of hand magic, making playing cards disappear, reappear, be cut into pieces and be magically taped back together. All the while, he brought a unique entertainment piece with his jokes and his stories of being a boy from South Carolina living his dream here in Maui. What really entertained me the most was his ability to drop a bowling ball from his magician hat only to turn around and drop a second one when taunted by an audience member. It was a fantastic show and we left ready to tell any possible tourists that Warren is definitely worth the high price of admission. He is a must-see here on Maui.
In good form, we left Lahaina and headed back to Kapalua to be met by our ridiculously comfortable bed at the Ritz. Laying down, we both had a sigh as we realized this is the last night we will be resting our heads in this paradise. But, there is a larger sense of happiness in this equation as we know that there is another paradise that awaits us in Austin, Texas. We just feel so lucky to be living these lives. But, we aren't going home yet. One more day awaits.

Our Week In Maui Day 4
Day 4
Sunday, October 17, 2010
Today started early... And we were more than ready and excited. We awoke at 5:30 a.m. (no alarm clock needed here in Maui) and prepared ourselves for the day with coffee and fresh fruit. Today, we drive the road to Hana! It is 56 miles of winding road through the northern part of Maui, meandering through Paia, Nahiku, Ke'anau and other awesome lil treasures like Honomanu Bay and botanical gardens filled with the lushest of Hawaiian plant life and the most jaw-dropping scenery with inter tangled vegetation and Pacific Ocean views. This drive will take us all day so we are prepping accordingly.
We leave at 7 a.m. To meet Steve Scott up the road a bit. He is a wonderfully sweet man who went to school with my Uncle Ken and Aunt Terri and still stays in great touch with my mom via Facebook. He lives in Lahaina and has a business renting GPS units that connect to your AUX input and give you a Hawaiian history lesson and act as your tour guide throughout many adventures, one being the road to Hana. He very graciously offered to let us use one free of charge for our road to Hana day so we meet him on Papalaua and he gets our Rental car all ready to go. I can not tell you enough how sweet this man is. He gives us pointers, a few more spots to see in Paia and sends us on our way, after I request that he pose for a picture with me.
And the journey begins. Kelsey and I both know that the journey to Hana is not rewarded by the city of Hana itself, as this is a simple city, but the experience of getting there is the true reward. With that knowledge, we sit back and just start taking it all in.
Our first stop is in Paia and we found the quaintest, cutest cafe called the Green Banana. Here, we got our antioxidants in the form of Acai Berry Blast smoothies. Across the street, we noticed Charley's and down a bit further, we saw Mama's Fish House... But more to come on those later.
Acai in hand, we hit the road again, completely unsure of what terrain this was really going to be. The roads begin to wind, narrowing to just a single car width in some spots. The bridges are short but there is no room for sharing so we yield to the oncoming traffic and allow them to travel the bridge before us. And, then it is our turn. There are 46 one lane bridges in this journey and we make it through them all, abiding by all of the customary bridge etiquette. Who knew there should be such a thing?!?!
Our first stop along this journey is the Garden of Eden botanical gardens. It is here that we had our first run-in with peacocks... And the absolutely breath-stealing views of some of the most beautiful vegetation we have ever seen. If you only look at a few of our pics because you are a party popper and super bitter that we didn't take you to Maui, I suggest you check out these. They are some of the best yet.
Okay, we kept on cruising up and down and around and around and around and around.... You get the gist. We stopped and checked out Kaumahina State Wayside Park, Honomanu Bay, Ke'anae Arboretum and even the Nahiku Market Stands before we finally arrived in Hana. It really is a beautiful little city. We had lunch at the Hana Maui hotel and then began our journey back through the 56 miles, eagerly anticipating the views that every turn would have in store for us. the GPS unit that we have by now named Mogwai, is telling us very interesting stories about Hawaiian history. And, while I can safely say that I love rocking' out in Maui now, I say no thank you to being here pre-1900's. NO MAHALO FOR ME!
On our way back, we stopped in Paia once again, hitting the shops and hoping to get asked to smoke some Maui Wowie with Willie or Woody. But, alas, only a few natives asked if we wanted to buy some pot and we just giggled and said NO MAHALO! The day was coming to an end so we made our way back to the Ritz Carlton... Such a tough life. As we unwind and think of all the beauty that Maui shared with us today, we know life is good and we smile. We are happy.

Our Week In Maui Day 3
Day 3
Saturday, October 16, 2010
What a great day to turn 29! Seriously, next year when I turn 30 I hope that we can go somewhere magical like this place. Okay, the denial phase is over... I am so elated to be turning 30 today. What more could I ask for? There really is no way to describe the way that I am feeling. Thousands of miles into the Pacific Ocean, I feel so loved, so appreciated, so accomplished, so determined... All things that I hoped to have and be by the age of 30. I know that, with Kelsey, I am right where I want to be, right where I need to be, right where I should be.
We went to sleep very early last night... I suppose we are not quite as acclimated to being 5 hours behind CST as we thought. Yes, we went to bed around 7p.m. But, the upside to that is we were awake by 3 a.m. Heeheehee... In all things perfectly perfect about Kelsey Kay, her first words to me were "happy birthday, baby!" in the sweetest, sleepiest voice ever. She is the most generous, appreciative, amazingly sweet and caring person that I have ever met. I feel so lucky to have her love... I feel it so strongly... Every day... Especially today. She is amazing.
Yeah yeah yeah....she's acting all lovey dovey because I just bought us tickets for a magic show here in Maui. And we all know Allison's an aspiring magician. Ok ok, her sentiments are as sweet and authentic as mine. We're both just having such an amazing time here together.
We're heading to the fitness center in a bit to get in a little cardio and then we're gonna go back to the Honolua General Store for breakfast. Sidenote: I have a serious addiction to potatoes...usually in the form of French fries or breakfast potatoes. That is all. More to come soon!
Okay, so we worked out... And I am obsessed with the treadmills that we used. Not only were they very smooth and easy to use... And not only were they Nike + iPod compatible... And not only were they situated so that we were looking out onto the ocean... They each had a fan. Gosh, I am easy to please. I definitely would have settled for a concierge standing there, blowing on me... But the fact that there was no bad breath involved really made it great.
True story. The morning's workout experience was fabulous. Breakfast was brilliant, too. Back to the general store where we got to witness girls doing a hula class and everyone around us appears to be just genuinely happy and content. Duh, it's Maui. Kelsey redeemed herself in shanghai by winning 9 hands. We didn't even play the last round, apparently too painful.
The birthday girl wanted to go for a walk so we headed back to the resort and down to the ocean to smell the salt water and see the waves crashing. We meandered through the grounds posing for outrageous photos and bitching about the uphill path until we came across the GENERAL STORE!!!!! For the past two days we had hopped in the car and driven this large out of the way route to get there all the while it's a whopping 1/4 of a mile from the Ritz. We about died.
Well, we just called room service for a cork screw since we weren't provided one....just the glasses. Makes total sense. Hey look at me, complaining about how bad we've got it here. Off to cheers a glass to the birthday girl.
The cork screw has arrived and a red wine toast has been made to a pretty solid 30 years and a healthy 30 more to come. Well, and then 30 more after that!I won't be too greedy... But I don't think living until 90 is asking too much. Uhhhmmm, right??? Okay, enough about that... Kelsey will now be telling us all about the lovely experience we had down at the Ritz poolside today.
We settled into our chairs and couldn't have chosen a better spot. Our server, Luke, remembered us from yesterday. Duh. I immediately informed him it was Allison's birthday and we got some delicious margaritas out of the deal. Well, Mike and Lynn next to us overheard this and informed Luke it was also Lynn's birthday. True story. We toasted to the lovely ladies and learned all about this charming couple from Oregon. It was so neat and relaxing...another perfect afternoon here.
The Pineapple Grill: hands down best meal both of us have ever had in our lives. But, we will get back to the food in a minute. Kelsey looked so beautiful... Pictures will come to you soon as we think we might have taken the best picture ever taken in the history of pictures... Well, maybe second only to that one of lil JFK Jr under his daddy's desk... That was pretty cute. Okay, so we walk in and every single person we pass greets us with an "aloha" as they take us to our table for two overlooking the beautiful, magical sun setting behind the neatest landscape I have seen yet. As we peruse over the wine list, neither of us can help but notice the sun sneaking it's way behind the trees... Photo time. We made magic happen with all of our scenic shots. And then, our server, Cara, the self-proclaimed goddess of compassion snaps wonderful shots of us together. Just beautiful and tranquil and lovely.
We both enjoyed a glass of red wine and devoured a luscious crab cake appetizer before indulging in our entrees. Mine, Allison, the beef eater of the two, had a succulent bone-in angus beef New York strip with local herbs and coffee rub that was served with garlic mashed potatoes and steamed green beans. BOMB.COM!
And I, Kelsey, had the most decadent fillet of mahi mahi ever. It was subtly seasoned and cooked perfectly only to be accompanied by the creamiest of risotto and chunks of pineapple. Dear god, what do all those food critics say? Oh yeah, it was the perfect marriage of flavors. We couldn't help but just sit and eat and dream that our plates would never be empty.
But we didn't have to worry about that as Tara, our server, brought Allison a divine slice of pineapple upside down cake with ice cream and caramel glaze. As I look back on the night I can't help but wonder if it was all a dream. Oops, I guess I was bound to type something worthy of a gag reflex. Y'all just don't understand. Well actually, about two thirds of you do!
The night ended pretty perfectly. We headed back to the hotel and slipped into comfy clothes and put the iPod on shuffle and basically snuggled on the lanai. We took in the last moments of Allison's birthday and went to bed at about 8:30 as we had a huge day in store.
Our Week In Maui Day 2
Day 2
Friday, October 15, 2010
What a way to start the day...Allison tapped me on the shoulder like a little kid excited to run out on the lanai and witness just what we had signed up for. And BAM!!!! Absolutely breathtaking view of utter paradise. The view to our left is the resort pools and palm trees and man made waterfalls, while the view to our right is the OCEAN!!!!! All you can see is blue for miles, a gorgeous mountain and nothing but clear skies.
Allison made some coffee and we just sat outside and took it all in and discussed the life and accomplishments of Miss Allison Michelle Johnson's 29-year-old self. We both concluded she's an absolutely phenomenal woman. Yes, she agreed. ;). After unpacking, a few photo opps and primping it's off to breakfast we go!!! Aloha!
We were not quite sure where to go for breakfast so we jumped in the rented Dodge Charger and set forth only to find what had been draped in darkness last night on our drive in... The most amazing views To be found anywhere in the Pacific! Heading through Kapalua, we are surrounded by the clearest ocean views and the softest breeze I have ever felt. I feel so relaxed and still so unbelievably lucky to have Kelsey here with me to take it all in, all the while holding my hand through every turn and bend in the road. Turning 30 hasn't felt appropriate until this moment... Did I just stumble across the meaning of life? :-)
Okay, so for breakfast we were not sure where we would end up but we found this adorably quaint and comfortable place in Kapalua. It is the Honolua Store.
Kels here...There's nothing like having your girlfriend shove packets of raw sugar and french vanilla creamer in your Coach purse for later consumption at the Ritz. French toast and a veggie omelet down. We're so ready for this day.
3933003 case number - this is simply a side note indicating how we were able to get our new iPad on the Ritz Carlton wireless network.
We made our way back to HWY 30 in pursuit of a grocery store so we could get our hands on fresh produce and fish for a steal and take advantage of our semi-furnished kitchen. We made it to a supermarket, grabbed some grub and tantalizing snacks, and headed back to the hotel.
We realized when we got back that semi-furnished kitchen means you have everything; blender; knives; pots; pot holders; mixing bowls; spatulas... You get the drift. With all of these cooking utensils, one might conclude that we would have a stove or oven. But, alas, we do not. We have a microwave though so tonight we will be working our magic with our salmon and tuna filets via 3 to 5 minutes of radiation heating with said microwave. And, you can be assured that I will be wearing the oven mitts they have supplied... Sans oven.Allison and I lathered on the sunscreen and headed for the pool. Everywhere we turned it was pure beauty. We plopped onto chairs, ordered some tropical drinks and observed in horror an obnoxious, loud and rowdy lesbian emerging from the pool giving our kind a bad name. Haha! Just kidding...sort of. We snapped some photos of the water and palm trees and just continued to look around in awe.
There really is nothing quite the relaxation we found whilst soaking up the Pacific rays. I feel like we have left behind any stress that we might have, no matter how small, at home. After our Mai Tai's were depleted (2 each totaling $60 total), we made our way back to the room where we sat on our lanai with chips, salsa, 2 decks of cards and some glowing smiles. Of course, shanghai rummy was on our minds so I, Allison, took a few moments to school Kelsey in this game that she loves so much. Final score 525 to 95. If anyone reading this is looking for lessons on this magical lil game, feel free to contact me directly. Apparently, I am a natural.
More to come soon... We love you guys!

Our Week In Maui Day 1
Day 1
Thursday, October 14, 2010
Today is the day. We have just boarded the plane for our first flight to LAX. And then, it is off to Maui. The excitement is already becoming increasingly overwhelming. We booked this trip on March 22nd. Maybe that is why today is the first day that this trip has seemed real. We have been looking forward to this destination for the past 7 months and today it all begins.
Kelsey is sleeping on my shoulder right now as we head west toward the Pacific. I have a Dr. Pepper and am watching 'Grownups' on the 12 inch tube television hanging from the ceiling of our 757. It is important to note that this is the first time Kelsey and I have been on a plane together. It really hit me as we were going through security. All I can do is smile. I feel so lucky to have fallen in love with someone so amazing. This is a big trip for us for so many reasons. Yes, I am turning 30 in just a few days but what i find to be worth celebrating even more is the fact that Kelsey and I have made it through the first year of our relationship and still look to every passing day as a blessing just to be with one another. I love you, Kelsey. There is no one else i want by my side in Maui, in this lifetime, in forever.
Kelsey here! I can't believe this is really happening. We are on our way to Maui! I feel so incredibly lucky to be experiencing this beautiful island with the love of my life! I cannot wait to see what Maui has in store for us, all the amazing scenery, delicious and fresh food, and exquisite culture! Allison turning 30 is the perfect reason to be smiling and celebrating everyday...not to mention the fact we are going on one year together in the strongest and healthiest relationship I could ever imagine. She's pretty much the coolest human raised by humans ever! Maui and memories here we come!!! Aloha!!!
Sidenote: I am not thrilled to be announcing that the woman sitting next to me on the plane has a nose running like a leaky faucet. If she gets us sick, I pray we don't run into her on the island.
***** it turns out, the sick girl next to us, Gertie, is now holding us hostage as kelsey has to potty and cannot maneuver her way out of our row due to said sleepy, sick girl.
Allison has had a headache for a while but it subsided enough to play a few games. I smoked her ass in shanghai rummy 660 to 175, however, she beat me at four games of word war in a row. Booooooooooo!
Ummm...the movie on this flight is Toy Story 3. What kind of horse shit is that? I will tell you... It is toy horse shit... There is one child on this plane and that child thoroughly enjoys this film. She is sitting in front of me, Allison, and rocking autisticly to the rhymes and ridiculousness of the movie. Her dad has told her to stop twice now... Let's hope his previous abuse is enough to scare her into stopping her rocking.
Update on Gertie... She has finally awoken, whether it be due to the obnoxiously loud fake cough Allison initiated or any natural drainage occurring from her head to her nose. Either way, Kelsey is now able to free her bladder of all her wrong doings and diet coke consumption thus far today. Okay, not sure exactly what it is Kelsey is freeing in the bathroom as she has been gone for about 6 minutes... She is back now...climbing over Gertie because she has gone into coma once again... Let's ask Kelsey about her experience and liberation at 36,000 feet.
Wow, thanks darling. Everything about my experience in the lavatory was magical except for the fact I walked in on a elderly man who did not turn the lever to occupied. We're now both slightly scarred and on the same plane for at least another few hours. Awesome. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Gertie for doing absolutely nothing. I had to hop over her to both leave and come back. My bladder is fine though and we're going to Maui!!!! And we just ate four Reese's and they were so delicious. Life is so goooooooood!
Sidenote: Seeing how Gertie is comatose, I am quite thankful that, unlike Kelsey, I have the bladder of... Well, hmmmmm, something that never has to go.... A statue? Yes, that is it... I have the bladder of a statue... A really, really pretty statue of course. That is all.
We landed. Everything is dark so we really have no idea what we have stumbled upon. We can't wait to begin day two, which might really seem more like day one since we will be in Maui hue entire day.
P.s. Our suite at the Ritz is absolutely everything we could have hoped for... But more to come on our deluxe residential Oceanside suite in day two.
